Violet Evergarden (????????????????, Vaioretto Ev?g?den) is a Japanese light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. It won the grand prize in the fifth Kyoto Animation Award's novel category in 2014, the first ever work to win a grand prize in any of the three categories (novel, scenario, and manga). Kyoto Animation published the first light novel on December 25, 2015 under their KA Esuma Bunko imprint. A 13-episode anime television series adaptation by Kyoto Animation aired between January and April 2018 with several advanced screenings taking place in 2017. An original video animation episode will be released in July 2018.

Plot
The story revolves around Auto Memory Dolls (??????, Jid? Shuki Ningy?): people initially employed by a scientist named Dr. Orland to assist his blind wife Mollie in writing her novels, and later rented out to other people who needed their services. In the present time, the term refers to the industry of writing for others. The story follows Violet Evergarden's journey of reintegrating back into society after the war is over and her search for her life's purpose now that she is no longer a soldier.

- Violet is a newcomer to the CH Postal Company, and works as an Auto Memory Doll--a ghostwriter for people who cannot write or are looking for help expressing their emotions in letters.
- As an abandoned and nameless child, Violet was found by navy officer Dietfried Bougainvillea. She killed several of his soldiers who attempted to rape her. Later, Dietfried gave her to his brother Gilbert in the military as a gift for his promotion to major to be used as a "tool" for war. Gilbert instead treated her as a human, taught her how to speak, read and write and named her after the Violet flower wishing she could grow up to be as beautiful as the plant. During the war she repeatedly played a vital role in battles. Trying to save Gilbert in the war's decisive battle, she lost both her arms. With the war over, her arms replaced with advanced metallic prosthetics, she decided to become an Auto Memory Doll in order to learn the meaning of the words "I love you" (????, Aishiteru)--Gilbert's last words to her.

- A former army commander, Claudia is the president of the CH Postal Company. He was a good friend of Gilbert during their time in the military and Claudia attempts to help Violet take the first steps of her new life in order to absolve himself of his own guilt, stemming from Violet's treatment back in the military.

- A major in the Leidenschaftlich Army, Gilbert came from an aristocratic family. While his actual fate is unknown as his body cannot be found, he is declared as dead given to the situation. He treasures Violet much more than anything else, and it is his final words to her--"I love you"--that drive her to move forward on her new path as an Auto Memory Doll. The only remains of Gilbert that Violet has is a green-colored brooch that reminds her of Gilbert's eyes.

Anime
The anime adaptation was first announced via a commercial of the light novel's first volume in May 2016. In June 2017, Kyoto Animation announced that Anime Expo, AnimagiC, and C3 AFA Singapore 2017 would host the world premiere of the first episode. The second episode was first screened at the KyoAni and Do Fan Days 2017 event on October 21, 2017 and the third episode in five theaters across Japan on December 10, 2017. The 13-episode anime aired from January 11 to April 5, 2018 in Japan. An original video animation episode will be released on July 4, 2018 with the final Blu-ray and DVD volume. The series is directed by Taichi Ishidate at Kyoto Animation with the screenplay written by Reiko Yoshida. Akiko Takase designed the characters and Yota Tsuruoka handles the sound direction. The opening theme is "Sincerely" by True while the ending theme is "Michishirube" (?????, lit. "Guidepost") by Minori Chihara. Netflix began streaming the series worldwide on January 11, 2018, except for the United States and Australia, where they began streaming on April 5, 2018.
When the Violet Evergarden Gaiden light novel was released, the jacket band announced that a "new project" was in progress and that it will be a completely new work for the anime.
